| Ornamental fish are an important export product for Taiwan . They are an extremely beautiful, low-maintenance, and interesting pet for children and adults alike. Taiwan breeds an broad variety of exuberantly colored fish featuring a wide range of sizes, shapes, and colors . Types cultivated include many species of tropical fishes, conservation tropical fishes, ornamental carp, and goldfish which are exported to many countries around the world.
Through advanced breeding technology, as well as decades of accumulated experience and development, new species are being introduced regularly. Some include the Dimidiochromis, Labidochromis, and Copadichromis. To improve the quality of ornamental fish, the breeding of minnows and large fishes is usually confined in a single farm. This practice applies to goldfish, early stage variegated carp, and some of today's famous tropical fish, such as the African prince and the Sciaenochromis Ahli.
Taiwan exported 12,203kg of ornamental carp to 15 different countries from the period of January 2004 until September 2005. The United States is the largest importer of this popular ornamental fish species at 4,765kg, followed by Malaysia with 2,137kg, then by South Africa, Hong Kong, and Germany, each importing well over a thousand kilograms of ornamental carp each. In addition, Taiwan exported a total of 235kg of goldfish, with Japan importing the bulk of this amount at 208kg.
Taiwan will continue to develop and breed new species of ornamental fish, plus looks forward to expanding its horizons in terms of export potential for this unique product.
