| Taiwan is the market leader in aquatic animal propagation. The Taiwan hatchery industry has considerable expertise; currently there are more than 100 species of artificially propagated edible finfish and shellfish, in addition to 300 kinds of tropical fish. Of these, around 70 species have reached commercial production scale, including grouper, milkfish, and tilapia, with the production of new species increasing every year. As a result, Taiwan 's aquacultural yield and value increase year by year, with various species of aquatic fry being offered for sale to domestic and international markets.
In May of 1996, the Fish Breeding Association of the Republic of China was formed. The Association cooperates with the Taiwan government, providing officials with industry information regarding the masters of aquaculture in Asia . The Association also promotes the excellent techniques of Taiwan 's aquaculture industry, fostering its well-deserved reputation as a world leader in aquaculture technology.
Having become an official member of the World Trade Organization in 2002, Taiwan can expect prices in the fish market will reach reasonable levels in the near future. From an economic point of view, in order to be more efficient and competitive, products should be produced in regions with lower production costs and sold in regions where higher prices are offered. Industry officials firmly believe Taiwan 's advanced techniques and abundant experience in aquaculture, coupled with its competitive prices, will enhance its competitiveness in the international market.
