Banana Fruit or "The Crescent Moon"

The banana is one of the world's top five fruits in production and is by far Taiwan's most important fruit. In earlier times, it was called the crescent moon in Chinese because of the natural arc of its shape. Rich in vitamins, minerals, potassium and micronutrients, bananas are thought to help in the growth of healthy cardiovascular tissue, aid in digestion, and even help a dull complexion to glow! The banana is a tropical fruit that flourishes in warm, humid climates, with average temperatures hovering between 25 to 32 degrees Celsius. Bananas grow best at low altitudes below 500 feet above sea level, where the risks of frost or typhoon damage are low, with an ideal planting time from March to June each year.

Banana Fruit Cultivation

Taiwan's climate is perfectly suited for the cultivation of this unique fruit. Of the many types of bananas cultivated in Taiwan, the most prolific varieties consist of the Northern Banana and Banana Goddess varieties, the Northern variety having originated in the Tamshui River region of Taipei; the Goddess variety was subsequently developed by making further refinements to the Northern variety.

Other varieties include the Chinese Dynasties, the Apple Banana, the Puff Banana, and the Redskin Banana, each of which has a unique appearance and taste.

Taiwan Banana Exports

Japanese consumers are especially fond of Taiwan's bananas. During the years Imperial Japan occupied Taiwan, many bananas were planted and cultivated in the central regions of Taiwan, for export to Japan. In 1967, Taiwan began producing large quantities of bananas in the southern stretches of the island, and presently has a cultivation area of over 50,000 hectares. Taiwan exported roughly US$19.5 million dollars of bananas in 2003, primarily to Japan and as well to Honk Kong, with various other emerging markets on the horizon. It is no wonder the banana has earned Taiwan the well-deserved designation of "the Banana Kingdom."

Preparation/Usage pic
Bananas can be prepared over one hundred different ways! Whether eaten as is, deep-fried, in banana splits, or as delectable smoothies, bananas are a delicious and highly nutritious treat. If bananas are still slightly green, then they are not ripe yet. As refrigeration will retard the ripening process, it is best to leave a bunch of bananas at room temperature for a few days to ripen. When a few brown freckles have developed on the banana peel, they are ready to be eaten.
Production Season pic
Bananas are produced year round, with most production coming from southern Taiwan during spring harvest, and from central Taiwan during the autumn.
Cultivation Regions pic
Bananas are cultivated in central Taiwan around Nantou County, and in southern Taiwan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung Counties.
